His spokesperson Martin Nersirkv (pron: Nar-sikv) says the Secretary-General commends the people of Solomon Islands for participating in peaceful, orderly parliamentary elections this month, leading to the election of the Prime Minister by parliament on August 25.
He says this demonstrates the commitment of Solomon Islanders to peace and democracy.
According to the UN spokesperson, the Secretary-General also expressed his pleasure that the UN was able to help Solomon Islands with the elections and had contributed to the conduct of the elections by successfully coordinating the deployment of international observers.
Nersikv said that Ban has also taken note of statements of observer groups that discussed what went right in the election, and what could be done better the next time Solomon Islanders go to the polls.
He says the Secretary-General encourages the government to address and implement these recommendations in order to improve the electoral process for the future.
