The said Incident is one of the most influential events in recent Taiwanese history. The tragedy started on this day in 1947 when the army from the mainland Nationalist government clashed with the local Taiwanese people, sparking a widespread ethnic tension.
There were numerous innocent Taiwanese killed at random, some estimates puts the total number of people killed at 10,000.
Taiwanese use this day to learn from the deep memories of this historical tragedy and collectively rebuild a history of Taiwan while promoting ethnic reconciliation and social stability for a brighter future. The Government of Taiwan in 1997 had designated the 28th day of February as a national holiday, also known as Peace Memorial Day.
