The quake hit at 15 minutes after midnight local time (1315 GMT Wednesday) 363 kilometres (226 miles) north-northwest of Santo, Vanuatu's largest island, at a depth of 82 kilometres, the USGS said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii did not issue an alert for the region.

An 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western Solomons in April last year triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands.
