Reports from Honiara say the earthquake happened after 2.00am, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale.
There were neither reports of damage nor a tsunami alert.
Earlier April last year, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake in the western parts of the Solomons triggered a tsunami that killed more than 50 people and displaced thousands.
