Mr. Sogavare, now the Leader of the Parliamentary Opposition, said the government had "deliberately" applied short-cuts in dealing with the issue of Mr. Moti's deportation from Solomon Islands, "merely to please Australia".

He challenged the Government to be responsible by observing acceptable international human rights protocols, and to fully comply with the correct legal procedures in processing the case of either repatriating or deporting Mr. Moti.

Mr. Sogavare said the criteria used in allowing the issue of Mr. Moti's saga to be deliberated on by the same single judge during its original application, and later in the appeal, would be seen as simply not in the best interest of good governance.

He said the idea of an appeal was to seek a second legal opinion.
