Speaking to Solomon Times, Kukum Traffic Director, Albert Samani, described the Christmas and New Year celebrations as "the quietest in years".
"In terms of road traffic accidents, there has been a total of 16 accidents for 2007 and 2008 put together," said Mr. Samani, adding this is a bonus for police.
He said a contributing factor to a lot of recent road accidents has been linked to young drivers who are under the legal driving age.
"We are facing a rise in under-age drivers in Honiara and our department's looking into ways to curb the issue."
The legal driving age in Solomon Islands is 18 years old.
Mr. Samani urged parents to take the responsibility of restricting young children going behind the wheels.
"It is the responsibility of parents to make sure their children who are under-age not to drive because they will face the consequence on behalf of their children."
He reminded all drivers on the road to carry their driving license at all time as police will step up on road checks.
