Dr Sikua issued a statement today saying the total abrogation of Fiji's constitution and the evocation of public emergency regulations have developed a "new situation of uncertainty which calls for a prompt response from leaders in the region."

The Prime Minister calls on the Pacific Islands Forum to defer implementing sanctions against Fiji until such time leaders in the region have reflected on the situation.

Dr Sikua has requested Pacific Islands Forum Foreign Affairs Ministers to meet at the earliest possible time to develop and firm and workable approach for the months ahead.

The Prime Minister says he is committed to the upholding of democracy and is actively working with all leaders in the region to develop an appropriate response to the current circumstances in Fiji.

In an unexpected turn of events Fiji's President, early last week, scrapped the constitution, sacked the judiciary and reappointed Commodore Frank Bainimarama and his cabinet for five more years. The move came about after the Fiji Court of Appeal declared the coup, and the subsequent actions taken by President Iloilo, as illegal.
