In his address to the General Assembly Dr. Sikua covered important regional and international pressing issues such as general global security, food security, and the current energy crisis.
The Prime Minister is being accompanied by the Minister for Foreign Affairs Hon. William Haomae, and the Chairman of the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee Hon. Laurie Chan and government officials including the Secretary to the Prime Minister Jerry Manele.
While in New York the Prime Minister also signed the international convention on persons with disability.
Dr. Sikua was also scheduled to meet with development partners from the European Union including Turkey and Italy that have recently joined other long time donor partners from EU to help Solomon Islands.
Mr. Haomae joined the Prime Minister in New York after holding bilateral talks with the Cuban Government on the current bilateral agreement between Solomon Islands and Cuba.
Under the agreement Cuba has offered to assist Solomon Islands by providing up to fifty doctors to work in Solomon Islands while Cuba would also help to train up to fifty new Solomon Islands doctors.
Two Cuban doctors are already in the country while twenty five Solomon Islands students doctors are already studying in Cuba with another twenty five expected to follow them some time before the end of the year.

The Prime Minister Dr. Derek Sikua arrives in Solomon Islands today after addressing the UN General Assembly for the first time since becoming Solomon Islands Prime Minister in December last year.
