Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has stated that the Solomon Islands Constitution has vested the power on the Governor General to proclaim the date for the resumption of Parliament upon the advice of the Prime Minister. Mr Sogavare says the Governor General is the right authority under the Solomon Islands Constitution to officially announce the date for the resumption of Parliament.
Mr Sogavare said the proclamation of the date for the resumption of parliament by the Clerk to Parliament has become the usual practice in the last 29 years and his government wants to put that right.
Mr Sogavare says his Grand Coalition for Change Government had taken the initiative to correct the prevalent unconstitutional practice whereby the Clerk to Parliament proclaims the date for the convening of parliament at the advice of the Prime Minister.
Parliament Meeting Delayed
The Parliament session scheduled for this Thursday has been postponed by the government to ensure that the resumption of Parliament is made by the right authority.
