The 7.9 magnitude earthquake that struck off Tonga led to a tsunami warning being issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre for Tonga, Niue, Kermadec Islands, Wallis-Futuna, American Samoa, Samoa and Fiji.
The earthquake was a result of the underwater eruption that took place off the Tongan coast on Wednesday morning.
According to Fijilive, the quake hit at 6.17 am and was centred 210 kilometres (130 miles) south-southeast of the Tongan capital, Nuku'Alofa.
According to Fiji Times Online, the Centre had issued the warning after sea level readings confirmed that a tsunami was generated and stated, "An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami."
According to the report, Niue was the only island in the region to report unusual wave activity, reporting a wave about 0.04m high.
The warning was cancelled after 8.30am.
