Opposition Leader Fred Fono says the government should not use public funds on Mr. Moti's defence.
Mr. Fono's comments came amidst an announcement by Mr. Sogavare that a team of legal experts had been engaged to prepare 666 questions in defence of Mr. Moti for the Australian legal authorities to answer.
But Mr. Fono says the child sex charges against Mr. Moti are personal and it is bad precedent to have the State to defend the foreign individual.
He says as a lawyer, Mr. Moti is capable of defending himself, adding that Mr. Sogavare's continuing defensive manner over his handpicked Attorney General has wider implications.
