The training started last year under the funding of Asia Foundation, AusAID, US AID with the support of the US government, and also supported by the Solomon Islands government.

Speaking with the training coordinator, Julian Maka'a, said that this week's training was the final part of the trainings that has been going for the past six months.

Mr. Maka'a said the final part of the training is called the 'Exercise Management' where participants are taught on management skills to conduct exercises during a disaster.

He said among the 24 participants are police officers, fire service officers and marine officers.

"We have four trainers from Fiji involved in conducting the trainings, and one representative from the US Embassy for the opening," he told Solomon Times.

Trainees who will graduate next month will go to the nine provinces, including Honiara to put into action what they have learnt during the training.

A happy participant, Chris Neo, told Solomon Times that he is "very happy to have gained a lot of skills and knowledge, especially to help people during emergency."

Mr. Neo said he is happy with the trainings offered and "I'm ready to do my work in the provinces and to put into practice all that I have learnt".
