A campaign is being carried out in the Western and Choiseul provinces to immunize children in light of a possibility of a measles outbreak.
UNICEF and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, in a joint effort, are sending 31 nurses in the tsunami affected areas to immunize and distribute Vitamin A to children aged between six months and less than five years of age.
Dr. Robyn McIntyre of UNICEF said a big number of people who are displaced by the disaster live in close quarters in makeshift camps, posing a risk of a measles outbreak.
Nurses will also be conducting routine vaccination of children less than a year old and circulate health promotional; materials, among other things.
The nurses will visit Gizo, Simbo, Ranongga, Shortlands, Munda, Noro, Vella La Vella and Kolombangara islands and parts of Choiseul.
