Speaking to Solomon Times, John Bakeua said delay in celebrating their country's independence that fell on 12th July was because leaders of the organizing committee of the Kiribati community in Solomon Islands were away overseas.

Activities held to mark the day include showcasing the traditional Kiribati dance, selling food and playing volleyball.

"The gathering provided a good opportunity for the elders to talk about traditional values and customs to the young generation," Mr. Bakeua said.

He said compared to other celebrations, "this year's one was not well organized because most of our leaders were abroad".

"We will stage a bigger celebration next year because Kiribati will celebrate its 30th Independence Anniversary," Mr. Bakeua told Solomon Times.
