The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Myline Kuve, says the theme for this year's International Women's Day 2011 is relevant in that "such an approach will help progress young girls and women in Solomon Islands."

Ms Kuve says official data has shown that the enrolment in primary and secondary education for young girls has improved over the years.

But Ms Kuve says despite encouraging data, there are still much fewer girls reaching tertiary level education, particularly in the field of science and technology.

Ms Kuve acknowledged the assistance of donor agencies that have, in a relatively short time, helped bridge the gap in school enrolments between boys and girls. "More needs to be done, but our young women are getting a much better start today, so that is a very good indication."

The International Women's Day 2011 is a global day celebrated on March 8 annually for the economic, political and social struggles and achievements of women, as well as looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations.
