The government stated that it will set up a tribunal to review the PSC's position on the appointment of the new Police Commissioner.
Secretary to the Prime Minister Dr John Roughan stated that the review would ensure that the PSC is more in line with government's views.
But Opposition MP Milner Tozaka says that if the Public Service Commission is allowed to champion government's line of thinking, the whole Public Service could be filled with cronies, relatives and friends. Tozaka said that the PSC must remain independent so that positions are filled through merit.
He says as custodians of the public service recruitment regulations and procedures, the PSC must be allowed to carry out its role in the process of engaging qualified people without political manipulation.
Government may set up review commission
It appears that the Government will go ahead with a review commission to look into the conduct of the board of the Public Service Commission.
