The Australian High Commissioner in a brief statement highlighted the importance of restoring road transport links between Honiara and West Guadalcanal as quickly as possible.
Frank Ingruber says "not only did the floods damage the roads and bridges, but many people also lost their food gardens."
He says restoring these transport links is essential to ensuring the people of west Guadalcanal have ongoing and reliable access whilst they re-establish their food gardens.
New Zealand High Commissioner Mark Ramsden says accessibility to markets, health care and other social services will allow people to resume their normal lives as quickly as possible.
The New Zealand High Commissioner says his country is pleased to make this funding contribution.
The assistance will be channeled through the Solomon Islands Road Improvement Project, an Asian Development Bank led project with funding from the Governments of Australia, New Zealand and the European Commission.
Australia and New Zealand Help Restore Road Links
Australia and New Zealand will provide up to 4.7 million dollars to help Solomon Islands undertake emergency repairs to roads and bridges after heavy rain caused flooding throughout the country.
