With more then five government vehicles damaged since the beginning of the year the Finance Minister has had enough. "Under section 22 (2) of the Public Finance and Audit Act, I will from today surcharge public officers who wreck and damage government vehicles and properties" Mr Lilo said. "It is about time we take a strong stand on this issue, these vehicles cost the Government at least $180,000 each"

In the past few weeks there has been growing pressure from the public for the government to do something. "We have seen G-plated vehicles being driven at odd hours of the day" a concerned individual stated. "And I can assure you its not government related activities"

Mr Lilo said the stance taken by the Government should curb the trend and help minimize the abuse of government vehicles and properties.

The Minister said the measure is appropriate considering the fact that huge amount of money is spent on the vehicles. "This year alone at least four vehicles have ben written of" A spokesman from the Ministry of Infrastructure stated. "Thats close to $720,000 down the drain"
